Parks, people, planet

Já lá vai pelo menos um mês e meio mas ainda assim valerá a pena falar dos principais momentos do Congresso Mundial de Parques organizado pela União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza e dos Recursos Naturais ou na sigla em inglês por que é mais bem conhecida, a IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Making long story short, ponho aqui alguns excertos do discurso de Zhang Xinsheng, presidente da IUCN, que acabou por marcar o tom (aliás esperado) do congresso. "A decade ago we gathered in Durban, South Africa, under the patronage of the late Nelson Mandela, and carried away the flame of a promise. This shared promise takes many forms, with countless unique names, in every language. We know it simply as a ‘protected area.’(...) We should celebrate that since the last World Parks Congress, the number of protected areas has doubled. More than 200,000 extraordinary landscapes and seascapes cover 15% of land and 3% of the oceans. Looking back, the number marks progress. Looking ahead, it sets us on the right path. Under the Convention on Biodiversity nearly 200 nations set a 2020 target to achieve protection for at least 17% terrestrial and 10% of marine areas. But quantity alone is not enough. If it were, we could just draw lines on maps until we reach our goal. But our ultimate goal, our shared promise, involves far more than numbers or scale -- it is a just world that values and conserves nature. To achieve that goal, we need to match quantity with quality. More parks, yes. But also better parks: more ecologically representative, better managed, durable and inclusive".

Nota: Na sessão de abertura foi ainda lembrado Nelson Mandela e este discurso no Congresso Mundial de Parques de Durban, em 2003 bem como algumas palavras sobre os 6 parques transfronteiriços sul-africanos no qual é destacado o Parque Transfronteiriço do Grande Limpopo.
